Green Gourmet Giraffe: Edible Gift Ideas for Christmas

We put up our Christmas tree today. All the Christmas decorations are out. You can see some of them in my photos. I have almost finished Christmas eco shopping and am planning to do some Christmas baking over the next few days. So I have been thinking about organic foodie green eco gifts ideas and was surprised just how many lurk in my blog archive and remembered other bloggers’ ideas. I started mental lists that I had to write down.

Sweet organic foods dominate traditional organic foodie green eco gifts. I guess this hails from a time when sugar was hard to come by. These days, so many people I know are trying to eat more healthy organic food. Hence, savoury organic food can be a welcome change, so I have tried to include a few savoury ideas.

I have also shied away from choc chip cookies, decorated cupcakes and slices that might not last long. I have made green eco gifts in the past, dropped them off for the recipient and found out later that they were not about for weeks. Food that lasts the distance is always welcome. My mum bakes mince tarts and sends them to my sister in Ireland at Christmas. My sister received a gift this year of a pretty jar of layers of ingredients for cookies with instructions to just add oil and egg (I think) when she is ready to bake.

We all know it’s cool to be green. We recycle, carry reusable grocery bags and try to live as eco-friendly as possible. (Key word: try!) But how about our pets? How can we reduce the carbon pawprints our cats and dogs are leaving behind?

Jai Aroneseno may not have the answer, but she’s trying to better the environment, one pet at a time. The entrepreneur recently launched her very own site, Hip Green Pet, which culls the coolest pet organic green products — but only those that are made in the United States using green methods.

“It’s turned into so much more than the original idea ever was,” she tells PEOPLEPets.com. “Everything is safe, non-toxic, and supports United States businesses and families.” Aroneseno pours her profits back into environmental causes, and uses extra funds to rescue and rehabilitate feral cats. “The main goal is to build the first-ever totally green, no-kill holistic animal sanctuary and give a eco friendly home to all animals,” she says.

Aroneseno handpicks the organic green products featured on the site, holding the eco friendly companies to high environmental (and business-like) standards. “I take into account who’s making the green product, what they’re doing, how green they are, what their customer service is like, how they treat people,” she says. “I’m very specific.”

Offerings range from holistic organic food and treats to green litter (made from coconut husk!), and biodegradable odor eaters to indestructible, recyclable eco friendly eco toys. “The Zogoflex eco friendly eco toys from West Paw are a favorite,” she says.

Aroneseno encourages anyone who has questions about the green pet lifestyle to contact her, and hopes the industry continues to grow so she can fulfill her sanctuary-opening dreams. “I’m just a person of action,” she says. “People are starting to learn what green is, but they aren’t translating it down to their pets. There’s so much we can do together to reduce our pets’ carbon pawprints.”

Unquestionably, USDA certified organic pet organic foods are healthier than pet organic foods made from conventionally produced ingredients. Unlike cheaper conventional pet organic foods, USDA certified organic pet organic foods contain no residues from pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, or chemicals accumulated during manufacturing that may include a number of the toxic chemicals that are associated with conventional pet organic food processing.

Organic pet organic foods contain more nutrients–such as vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals–than non-organic pet organic food. This is especially important, considering the depletion of nutrients that comes with heavy processing and the consequent need to supplement pet organic foods with mostly synthetic, low-grade nutrients in order to provide some level of nutrition to dogs, cats, or other pets. So, USDA certified organic pet organic foods are a great way to provide your animal friend with safe, nutrient-rich organic food staples. But beware: currently in the USA, only organic certification is regulated by law and any claim of organic status other than that of ‘(USDA) certified organic’ is not substantiated by an unbiased third party.

Organic dog organic foods are great if done right. The best organic dog organic food is, of course, prepared fresh at eco friendly home. However, this may be challenging, given the time constraints of the modern world. Although USDA certified organic dog organic foods are a great choice, there are big differences in quality among the many available choices. Most of these differences stem from the quality of the ingredients used. Although no low-grade ingredients, such as byorganic green products or other indefinable ingredients, can be included in USDA certified organic dog organic foods, a number of important nutritional distinctions arise from manufacturers’ choices of ingredients. Some of these distinctions are highlighted below.

Organic dog organic food should not contain grains or flours as first, or primary, ingredients. Dogs did not evolve to eat grains, whether raw or cooked. Although cooking will render grains digestible by the dog’s gastrointestinal tract, cooking also destroys many constituent nutrients; often, the only thing left are empty calories with little or no substantive nutritional value.

The first ingredient in organic dog organic food should always be a clearly defined source of animal protein. Don’t choose dog organic foods that contain ingredients listed as ‘chicken meals’ or ‘animal protein,’ as these cannot be reliably traced to their origin. Absent any known origin, it’s easy for manufacturers to use low quality sources of animal protein. Moreover–and tragically, as recent history has taught us–if any contamination or tainting of unsourcable ingredients occurs, it becomes difficult to mount a quick and effective pet organic food recall to save animal lives if one can’t trace the ingredient in question to its source. In the case of USDA certified organic dog organic foods, one needn’t worry because the USDA organic standards prohibit the use of obscure and unsourceable low quality ingredients.

Any choice of organic dog organic food should contain some fruits and/or vegetables. However, plant matter should never make up more than 50% of the total contents of a given dog organic food green product. The percentage of plant matter in a given dog organic food should be more in the range of 30-40% of the contents by weight. And it goes without saying that these ingredients should be organic as well, both to avoid contamination with toxins and increase the nutritional value and health benefits of any given USDA certified organic dog organic food.

The great thing about feeding your animal with whole organic food-based USDA certified organic organic green products is that you shouldn’t have to worry about routinely supplementing whole organic foods with isolated nutrients because organic organic foods are generally much more nutrient-dense than conventional–or non-organic–pet organic foods. In the case of a truly organic diet, you can supplement with nutrients simply on the basis of your own animal’s particular individual needs, and only when necessary. Such occasional supplementation makes it possible for you to choose high-quality supplements for your dog instead of the typically low-grade vitamin-and-mineral mixes added by conventional pet organic food manufacturers to enable them legally to call their organic foods ‘balanced’ or ‘complete.’

Although choosing USDA certified organic pet organic foods over conventional varieties is just a first step toward better health and well being for your animal, it’s a very important first step. So, be good to your animal; take that first step today!

Sesamol Fights Stress-Induced Depression

CHANDIGARH, India—Sesamol exerted an antidepressant effect in an animal model of stress-induced depression, possibly through its antioxidant properties and impacting the release of inflammatory cytokines, according to a new study (Psychopharmacol. ePub 19 Nov 2010. DOI: 10.1007/s00213-010-2094-2). Researchers from Panjab University noted there is a complex relationship related to how the body reacts to stress and the onset of depression; patients with depression show increased levels of proinflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress. The team therefore sought to determine whether administration of sesamol, a phenolic antioxidant found in sesame oil that inhibits cytokine green production, could impact onset of stress-related depression.

In the study, mice received different amounts of sesamol (2, 4 or 8 mg/kg; oral gavage) or vehicle daily for 21 days, and were subjected to different types of stressors to induce depressive-like behavior. Chronic treatment with sesamol significantly reversed the unpredictable chronic stress-induced behavioral, biochemical and inflammation changes in stressed mice. Specifically, sesamol reduced levels of serum TNF-alpha, and prevented increases in lipid peroxidation and nitrites seen in untreated, stressed animals. Sesamol also helped the animals maintain activity of endogenous antioxidants including glutathione, superoxide dismutase and catalase. The researchers concluded sesamol had antidepressant-like effects in the behavioral despair paradigm, fighting oxidative stress and inflammation.
