How to Simplify and Green Your Christmas | Parenting Pink

Christmas is a wonderful time of the year – filled with rich organic foods, family gatherings and traditions. It’s a time of love, to gather with your family and loved ones to celebrate our abundance and in some religions – the birth of Jesus Christ.

My family, like many of yours I’m sure has a long-standing tradition of trading green eco gifts during the Christmas holiday. My mom is the supreme expert in Christmas eco shopping – no matter where she goes during the year in her travels, she’s always on the look out for “little treasures” to pick up for Christmas green eco gifts. For her, the ability to give a gift to someone is her way of saying “I love you” or “I care about you”. She’s really good at it and often has a closet stocked with presents months before December actually rolls around.

While some of you might be nodding and empathizing with her organization because you have the same approach, others of you might be thinking – “Oh God, I could/would never do that!”

Personally, I’ve rarely been that organized and over the last few years I’ve shifted my strategies at Christmas. Since becoming a sustainability advisor and learning about society’s overuse of natural capital (materials and resources we take from nature to manufacture “stuff”) and the uneven distribution of wealth, I’ve drastically changed my gift – giving philosophy at Christmas time in an attempt to “Green My Christmas”. I really don’t need that much “stuff” anymore and am constantly battling with the excited gift-givers in my life to modify attitudes towards the action of gift-giving and the results: rapidly accumulating more “stuff” and its impacts all with way through its lifecycle.

How many of you know what I’m referring to? How many of you feel the same way? A little bit overwhelmed by the future conversations you have to have about taming the eager family members? Some of you might even feel like a bit of a Grinch – squashing the gift-giving pleasure your extended family might be very deeply entrenched in!

The challenge becomes how to balance your loved one’s need to give a gift, thereby expressing their love and appreciation to you, with your needs? No matter if your needs around giving and receiving green eco gifts are: cutting down on the amount of “stuff” your family accumulates; upholding your commitment to reduce your impact on the environment; provide opportunities to others in developing nations; reduce the amount of natural capital you consume through “stuff”; or provide high quality, educational, and non-toxic eco friendly eco toys for your children to learn and grow with there are ways to strike a balance.

You can “green” your Christmas, meet your needs as well as be open to receiving green eco gifts from your loved ones. The following are a few strategies you can use to open the discussions with your loved ones and set loving and clear intentions around gift-giving and receiving to green your Christmas without sounding like a Grinch!

Strategy #1: Reduce

Convene a family talk session or help to organize a gift-exchange with the intention to cut down on the volume of green eco gifts given within your family circle. Gift exchanges typically pair up family members to exchange gives, ensuring all members give and receive a gift. By exchanging green eco gifts with one other family member, it can relieve the pressure to give a gift to everyone yet satisfy the need to give a gift (and show love)! They can be really fun and can have creative guidelines such as: the green eco gifts must be hand-made, cost no more than £X dollars, be practical etc. Use your imagination!

One of the best parts about gift-giving is the element of surprise! Wondering and waiting to see what is contained in the packages under the tree is fun and especially jazzes kids up! The only challenge to a green Christmas is all of the wrapping paper! If every American family wrapped just 3 presents in re-used materials, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 football fields. A suggestion is to have a sewing weekend and create re-useable wrapping like cloth bags. One year my family did this and we have been sending the bags back and forth each year. You still get the excitement of unwrapping without all of the paper waste!

Strategy #2: Substitute

This strategy is useful in several ways. If you are concerned about cheap imported green eco gifts, toxins, pollution, and habitat destruction as unwanted consequences of being a consumer, there are MANY ways of substituting a traditional gift to one from an “earth and people friendly” source. Kids eco friendly eco toys are a great example: instead of purchasing imported eco friendly eco toys, suggest to your family circle they look for eco friendly eco toys made locally or ones that are designed to last a long time and built with earth-friendly materials such as wood, bamboo, and materials like organic cotton etc.

This strategy is also great for stretching the value of a dollar. Instead of brand new organic green products, suggest to your family circle you’d be appreciative of receiving a gift that has been recycled or purchased second hand. Thrift stores, Value Village, local recycling depots, and yard sales are great places to shop for good quality second hand goods like: clothes, shoes, books, kids eco friendly eco toys and house wares. Lay down a creative challenge to family members and ask them to create you something from recycled organic green products. I once received a table made out of beach driftwood and recycled glass top. It was beautiful and I really appreciated the transformation of a waste green product into something new, esthetically pleasing and highly practical!

Strategy #3: Give services not organic green products

I once had a boss tell me that financial capital (money) wasn’t good for anything but spending on natural capital (i.e. stuff). What?! Not true in the least…if your goal this year is to drastically cut down on the amount of physical green eco gifts suggest lovingly to your family to give the gift of services. A wonderful opportunity to invest in your health and well-being, service green eco gifts could include hair cuts, massages, visits to naturopaths or body care. These can be purchased through local providers allowing financial capital used to contribute to your local community economy while satisfying the gift-giving needs of your family circle!

One of my favorite ways to provide service through my gift-giving is through programs like Oxfam’s Unwrapped program. Oxfam provides opportunities to purchase green eco gifts like a goat, chicken, pig, fruit trees, water purifiers, school supplies and bicycle ambulances that will help transform the lives of people sustainable living in poverty. Last year my brother got fruit trees (given in his name) and my dad received the gift of a farmer’s pack (given in his name) which included several animals like a pig, a duck and even a pile of manure!

Strategy #4: Avoid

Some people think giving money is tacky and requires little thought. I actually beg to differ and believe it provides a very useful strategy for greening your Christmas. It is very easy to make a loving request to your family this Christmas by requesting that any money they might spend on buying “stuff” could be used differently. For example, ask your gift-givers to contribute the funds to a registered education fund for your children or as a family, decide to take the money you would have spent on green eco gifts and contribute to a charity or non-profit of your choice. For several years, I adopted a killer whale pod through my aquarium, supporting research and conservation for these beautiful mammals. Recently I have loaned £200 to 4 entrepreneurs through Kiva.org, a non-profit organization that matches lenders with developing nation entrepreneurs. You can communicate with them directly and Kiva.org has a 98% repayment rate!

Suggest your family comes together to share a beautifully prepared meal, play games together or read prepared letters, sharing what they appreciate about you, giving everyone an opportunity to connect with their need to express their love and emotions but without the physical green eco gifts. Getting into the spirit of things doesn’t have to include just the green eco gifts!

The reality is that there are many solutions to help you green your family during the Christmas season and I encourage you do step up and share your needs with your family circle in a loving way, empathizing with their needs and meeting somewhere in the middle. Use one or all of the strategies to best suit your needs and celebrate organic baby steps! Shifting deeply engrained mindsets within your family circle can sometimes require many little shifts instead of one giant one so don’t set yourself up for disappointment! As always, the best way is to just lead by example, providing opportunities to talk and gently educate your family circle. Typically we are resistant of things we don’t understand so commit to sharing what you know and you’d be surprised what might happen!

Green Gourmet Giraffe: Edible Gift Ideas for Christmas

We put up our Christmas tree today. All the Christmas decorations are out. You can see some of them in my photos. I have almost finished Christmas eco shopping and am planning to do some Christmas baking over the next few days. So I have been thinking about organic foodie green eco gifts ideas and was surprised just how many lurk in my blog archive and remembered other bloggers’ ideas. I started mental lists that I had to write down.

Sweet organic foods dominate traditional organic foodie green eco gifts. I guess this hails from a time when sugar was hard to come by. These days, so many people I know are trying to eat more healthy organic food. Hence, savoury organic food can be a welcome change, so I have tried to include a few savoury ideas.

I have also shied away from choc chip cookies, decorated cupcakes and slices that might not last long. I have made green eco gifts in the past, dropped them off for the recipient and found out later that they were not about for weeks. Food that lasts the distance is always welcome. My mum bakes mince tarts and sends them to my sister in Ireland at Christmas. My sister received a gift this year of a pretty jar of layers of ingredients for cookies with instructions to just add oil and egg (I think) when she is ready to bake.

So, Christmas is almost here, and hopefully you’ve already got your gifts in order. However, if you haven’t, then as of today (Sunday, December 19, 2010) you’d better get cracking. Your options are whittling down and trust me most stores are madhouses. Case in point; my boyfriend Dave had to hit the mall to get a pair of glasses fixed today and was out of the actual shop in minutes, but spent 45 minutes sitting in the parking lot, waiting to get out. Insane!

Hitting a smaller store is a good bet, or at least, a less busy than the mall bet, especially if you have a nice inexpensive and green day-before gift basket in mind.

That said, you’re seriously running out of time, and/or looking at insanely expensive shipping, if you’re eco shopping for green gifts online at this point. With that in mind, here are some places that DO offer last minute Christmas shipping, along with my opinion of how easy or hard it is to find green stuff there…

Gift ecological cards almost anywhere: You can get gift ecological cards almost anywhere and have them sent via email for free. Personally, I don’t consider gift certificates all that great, because they don’t say, “I care” they tend to scream “Last minute” or “I don’t know you well enough to know what you’d like, or take the time to figure it out” which begs the question, why get that person a gift? Still, I’ve been known to send a gift certificate IF it’s for something that runs personal, eco-friendly and I know the person would love it, say an email gift certificate at LUSH or an iTunes gift certificate (their term for emailed gift ecological cards).

Amazon.com: Today is the last day to get FREE shipping in time for Christmas, but you can also still ship standard on the 20th or free 2 day with Amazon Prime on the 21st. Amazon has a better than fair selection of green goodies and they make it somewhat easy to find that green via Amazon Green Pages. However, they’re not perfect. Often they categorize green goods in totally weird/wrong places or put non-eco stuff on their green pages, so be careful.

Organic Bouquet: This shop is a little expensive in my opinion, but you can get last minute green gifts here. They also are still offering free overnight flower delivery and free 2-day wreath and gift basket delivery. However, not sure for how many more days – they sort of failed to mention this in the fine print (blah). I picked three decently priced gifts to share, such as…

Barnes Noble: Offering free 2 day shipping if you order £25 worth of qualified free shipping goods by 11:59 PM ET on December 20, 2010. They don’t have as many green goods as Amazon, but I know some people like them better, so I figured I’d mention them. You can score green books here a’ plenty or even some green eco friendly eco toys from eco friendly companies like Sprig or Idbids.

Beautiful Sweets: Offers super green (and organic) cookies. They have a two day bake + ship deal, so to get a nice gift to someone from this shop, you’ll need to order by the 21st I’d imagine. Right now they’re offering a great deal though, where you can get free shipping on their holiday gift baskets by entering the code ‘sleighride’ during step two of the checkout process. I took a peek, and these gift sets, like the 8 organic cookies, mug organic cocoa basket, are so adorable and not even as expensive as I thought they’d be.

ReuseIt.com: This shop, formally Reusable Bags, is offering a £12.95 flat-rate 2-day shipping deal until the 21st at midnight. You can score well-priced reusable bags (obviously) but also BPA-free water bottles and many other eco-friendly reusable items.

Oompa: You can get free Ground Shipping for most orders that come to £65 or more at Oompa, but to get goodies in time for Christmas, you’ll need to order by 3pm on the 20th. Oompa offers a fair selection of green eco friendly eco toys, but tends to run out of hot items, like the best Plan Toys, quickly.

Giggle: Has a smaller, but unique collection of decently priced organic eco friendly eco toys for babies or toddlers. Not much for older kids. They’re offering Christmas shipping with standard delivery until midnight tomorrow (the 20th), but any orders after that will cost you more in shipping to get a Christmas delivery.

ChildTrek: Has some various holiday shipping options to sort though. However, the basics are that you can get stuff by Christmas if you order this week (sooner = less expensive shipping) and you’ll be able to find really nice eco-friendly eco friendly eco toys at ChildTrek and many are well-priced.

Eco-friendly organic green products are a fast growing market. People are aware that environmental pollution is threatening the existence of planet and we all need to think of ways to be more eco-friendly.

People are now more aware these days and want to find ways to be more eco-friendly. If you thought it would make your life a bit tougher, it is nothing like that. You can sustain your way of sustainable living and still be eco-friendly. You just have to do things a little differently. Consider the environment while doing your daily chores. Those little things would combine to impact the environment in big way.

You could do simple things like switching off electric appliances when unnecessary, using public transport instead of your own car, use water in a bowl instead of running tap water while shaving, etc. Every little thing will help. Helping environment does not mean that you have to change your lifestyle completely. Keep it simple. You can do your bit.

Eco-friendly bags are the latest trend in waste reduction. As we all know, plastic bags have become a grave challenge for the world environment. Ending up in threatening landfills every year, they need to be replaced with urgency. Although several governments and organizations have understood the gravity of the situation and responded accordingly, much more needs to be done. Every individual can play a role in helping the situation. It is time we take upon ourselves to tackle the problem and undertake an oath to begin using eco-friendly bags instead of those harmful plastic ones.

Use of CFL bulbs is another thing that would make us more energy-efficient, thus reducing the impact on environment. It is good to deploy these to replace incandescent bulbs that drain valuable energy. While using CFL bulbs, you will actually use a quarter of the energy you use compared to light a normal bulb, bring your electricity bill down to a fraction of what it usually is. These bulbs are one of the most simple and practical means to become eco-friendly. Gains are great, both for ourselves as well as the environment.

There are several eco-friendly appliances which perform functions that can greatly save on energy consumption. For instance, you can buy eco-friendly programmable thermostats which tap much less energy. The thermostat would automatically shut the A/C or furnace unit for you, enabling you to set a temperature and forget about the unit altogether.

You could use eco-friendly organic green products with various appliances within your eco friendly home or office. You can use ‘green’ chemicals in place of the regular ones which have hazardous effects on the environment. This would not only protect your body but also lessen the chemicals you release into the world. You could go for solar or battery-powered equipment. You could bring down your usage of paper by opting for e-books.

Price is not a deterrent for people becoming eco-friendly. If you check, you will find that eco-friendly organic green products often end up saving you money. We have to cultivate the habit of environmental preservation in everything we do.

Simple things like use of eco friendly bags could play a part in controlling environment pollution. After all, even little things can trigger big change if everyone works together.
