Greener Gardening in the UK
Many people think gardening takes a lot of time and work. This is not always the case! There are types of gardens to suit all climates and lifestyles. In many places, native plant gardens require little water and will attract beautiful butterflies. Even if you have only a small yard, or no yard at all, you can grow herbs and vegetables in pots. This article provides some helpful tips for home gardeners.
Be aware of the type of lighting that you use with the plants in your landscaped garden. Any kind of bright light tends to wash out the cool colors like blue, purple, and green. These kinds of lights are best when used in shaded areas as they will create maximum impact.
Plant early flowering annuals. For a spring flush of color, plant early flowering annuals. They enjoy cooler daytime temperatures, and do well in areas where nights get quite cold. Sow seeds in fall: they will lay dormant over the winter, and germinate in the spring. Good varieties include snapdragon, california poppy, candytuft, stock, linaria and cornflower.
When planting rose bushes the location is essential. You need to choose a location that gets plenty of direct sunlight. Roses need at least 6 hours of sunlight in order to grow as large as they possibly can. It is important to find the perfect spot before planting them in your yard.
A good tip for growing salad greens, is to mix up a variety of salad seeds together and then, broadcast or throw the seeds across your prepared bed. After you have strewn the seeds, lightly rake the soil and tamp gently. The best salads are the tender little seedlings. As you harvest your salad, throw more seed down to replace the greens that you have just eaten.
Be careful when applying mulch. Too much can suffocate a plant’s roots and prevent moisture from penetrating deeply into the soil. Too little will not be able to suppress weed growth, effectively. An appropriate amount is 2 to 3 inches of organic mulch. Always keep mulch away from a plant’s crown or stems.
Use natural mulches in flower beds. The mulch effectively suppresses the growth of weeds while adding essential nutrients to the garden. The mulch also aids in water retention, so you do not have to water your flowers as much. Additionally, a mulched flower bed or garden is very aesthetic.
When getting your garden ready for winter, remove all dead plant matter. Many bugs can lay dormant in your soil through the winter. Dead plant matter is the perfect food source for these insects. If you leave the dead stems and leaves in place, you are giving any insects a head start on destroying your garden for next year.
Whether you want to grow your own food, provide habitat for wildlife, or just like to stop and smell the flowers, almost anybody can make a garden, even in small spaces. Use the knowledge gained from this article to make the most of your home garden, whatever type it may be.
